CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

“It’s been confirmed,” DI Smyth said. “The woman found by Four Lanes End is Zoe Granger.”

Nobody commented on this. Everyone inside the small conference room knew deep down that this was the inevitable outcome.

“Miss Granger had been missing for four days when she was found,” DI Smyth said. “Now we have a positive ID we need to try and trace her movements in that time. Where was she in the four days between her disappearing and her ending up dead?”

“Do you think there’s a chance that she was taken and kept alive somewhere?” DC King put forward.

“It’s possible,” DI Smyth said.

“Why?” DC Moore said. “Why keep her alive for all that time if they’re planning on killing her and chopping off her head, arms and legs?”

“We don’t know, Harry. Right now, we know very little about these people.”

“I reckon she was abducted and taken somewhere,” Bridge said. “And held prisoner until they decided to kill her.”

“We’ve had another report of a missing woman,” DI Smyth said. “Emily Grant took her daughter to a ballet class last night, and she didn’t return to pick her up. According to Emily’s daughter, her mother usually waits at a friend’s house while Emily is at ballet, but the friend confirmed that she didn’t turn up yesterday evening.”

“Who reported her missing?” DC King said.

“The woman who runs the ballet class tried to contact her,” DI Smyth said. “But Emily didn’t answer her phone. The daughter had the presence of mind to phone the friend, and it was her who contacted the police.”

“What about the husband?” DC Moore said.

“Out of the picture. He and Emily have been divorced for three years. The dance academy is just around the corner from the friend’s house and the uniforms that attended retraced the route and carried out a quick door-to-door. A woman who lives a few doors down from the friend remembers seeing a white van parked in the road for a short while. It ties in with the time Emily should have been making her way to her friend’s house.”

“The camper at the Grantchester campsite told us about a white van too,” Bridge remembered. “It could be relevant.”

“Unfortunately,” DI Smyth said. “The witness couldn’t tell us any more than that. It was a white van – that’s all.”

“What about CCTV?” Bridge said. “Do we know if any of the properties have cameras?”

“It’s early days,” DI Smyth said. “We’ll check out the route Emily usually took from the dance academy to the friend’s house, and hopefully we’ll get lucky.”

“What else do we know about her?” DC King said.

“Very little,” DI Smyth said. “She’s twenty-nine, divorced and she has an eight-year-old daughter. We’ll speak to her family and friends during the course of the day. I spoke to Smith yesterday.”

“How is he enjoying his holiday?” Bridge asked.

“It’s not a holiday, and he told me something interesting, if slightly disturbing. A friend of Horace Nagel’s hinted at something we need to consider. He spoke of megarich clients who are very partial to macabre products.
